Homemade Laundry Detergent

I just finished making a new batch of laundry detergent today. This recipe lasts my family of 6 approximately 4-6 months. We average about 12 loads of laundry per week. This detergent works great in HE washers since it is low sudsing. The kids absolutely love helping to make the detergent as well.

Ingredients
  • bar of soap, i like to use pure glycerin soap or Dr Bronners castile soap, but you can use any!
  • 1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
  • 1/2 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (not baking soda, the only place I've found here in the Springs that sells this is King Soopers).
  • water
  • essential oil of your choice, i love lavender (optional)

Tools
  • 5 gallon bucket
  • cheese grater or knife
  • stainless steel pot, medium size
  • long spoon
Instructions

Shave or grate soap.

Place in pot with 5 cups water and heat on medium till soap is completely melted.

While soap is on stove, fill your 5 gallon bucket up with 3 gallons hot water from sink.

Once soap is completely melted pour into 5 gallon bucket with hot water and stir. Add in borax and washing soda and stir till dissolved.

Add about 40 drops of essential oil, more or less to your liking.

Now you have a big bucket of soapy liquid, cover with lid and let sit overnight. It will gel up as it cools. When it completely cools stir it and add some to the container of your choice. We've been reusing an old laundry soap bottle for 2 years now, I like it since I can use the same measurement in the lid.

Use approx 1/4- 1/3 cup of detergent per load depending on how soiled your laundry is. Shake the container before each use since it does tend to separate.

We've been using this recipe for 2 years now and love it. I have had to buy a new box of washing soda once so far, and new borax twice (but i also use borax in other household cleaning recipes).
the original start up cost was as follows:
5 gallon bucket  $2.78
lid                      $0.98
Washing Soda   $3.85
Borax                $2.98
bar soap            $2.00

Total                 $12.59

What it cost me to refill my container now $2
Cost per year $7.40! Enjoy your savings!
Added bonus, my 10 year old daughter has sensitive skin and it was hard to find a laundry detergent that did not make her itchy and irritable, this soap rinses out great and does not irritate her sensitive skin at all. It ia also great for babies delicate skin.
